Casting steel requires special tools and specialized techniques to create finished metal products. There are a number of different types of steel castings, depending on the type of alloy used and its mechanical properties.

Carbon Castings:
The carbon content of a steel casting determines the strength and hardness of the final product. Carbon content can be manipulated to increase or decrease strength, toughness, and ductility.

Alloyed Castings:
Steel castings that are enriched with alloying elements can achieve desirable mechanical properties, such as corrosion resistance, heat resistance, or wear resistance. Common ingredients include nickel, molybdenum, chromium, and vanadium.

Stainless Steel:
The high chromium content in stainless steel provides natural corrosion resistance for many applications. Other common alloying elements in stainless steel include manganese, silicon, nitrogen, sulfur and phosphorus.
Stainless steel is typically classified according to its tensile strength. Fully annealed, fully hardened, and quenched and tempered stainless steels are commonly found in automotive, industrial, railroad and marine applications.

Top Pouring:
The process of producing a steel casting involves bringing the molten steel from the crucible into a mold. The mold is shaped to form a sprue hole and then filled with molten steel to the desired size.

Removing Non-Ferrous Materials:
The casting process may also involve removing non-ferrous materials such as copper, aluminum, brass and bronze. These components are often removed from the final product using a scraping, chipping, or blasting procedure to remove unwanted material.

Inspections and Product Analysis:
The mechanical properties of cast steel are analyzed to ensure that they meet customer specifications. Inspections may include dimensional checks, chemical analyses, and surface finish inspections.
